Role of a Data Analyst

Technology advancement has helped a lot of business in one way or the other, trades and jobs that one could not even imagine of few years ago are today a reality. Different industries such as medical, finance, legal, logistics etc. have different functional requirements and then there are a variety of support functions or services to support these industries. These support functions such as marketing research department, survey research, Information Technology services, BPO’s, etc; all need a Data Analyst. These Data Analysts are required at all places that calls for a need to inspect, transform and model data as per the company needs.

Analysing Data can be defined as a process of assess data using analytical and logical reasoning to scrutinize each element of the data given with the aim to emphasize on valuable information, recommending conclusions and supporting design building. Data from diverse sources are gathered, reassessed, and evaluated to reach a final conclusion.

Data analysing methods can however be divided into four distinct categories as follows:

- Data mining: Uses automated data analysis techniques to uncover previously undetected relationships among data items previously stored in the data warehouse. It endeavours to ascertain buried rules underlying the data.

- Text analytics: Is a method for extracting usable knowledge from unstructured text data by identifying core concepts, sentiments, and trends, and using this knowledge to support decision making.

- Business intelligence: is a popularised umbrella term used to portray set of applications and technologies for gathering, storing, analyzing, and providing access to data to help businesses make better decisions.

- Data visualization: Is the study of the visual representation of data. It is any technology that allows end users to view data to help them understand the information better and appropriately use it in a business context.

A Data Analyst can be defined as one who specialises in gathering data from different sources (primary or secondary), assembling/ organising and analysing them using data management and reporting systems. Though the basic role of a Data Analyst is simply to compile and analyse data, his role may differ as per the industry type; however some of his roles that remain common in all fields are;

- Filing the nature and composition of the business data through rational modelling.

- Evaluating and extracting business information to recognize models and associations between diverse data points.

- Planning and copying data directly from system to system to answer an existing system problem.

- Creating and generating information and data reporting tools to help business executives make better decision.

- Execute statistical study of business data. Evaluate supply sketch map to determine fruitful results.

A data analyst in any field should necessarily possess certain virtues such as technical skill with automatic data gathering and reporting systems; definitely including capability to troubleshoot programming blunders and system protection measures. An individual is also required to be well versed with procedural benchmarks and guidelines definite to a particular region of research, industry, or market depending on the nature of the data gathered and analyzed.
